National Cowboy Poetry Rodeo

Cowboy and Cowgirl Poets will "ride" against each other on-stage performing their best cowboy poetry which will be judged by a panel of five (5) judges, throwing out the high and low scores for a total score in each category. There will be two go-rounds with an average as in rodeo and their average scores will determine the Champions. The Cowboy Poetry Rodeo is an event, fashioned after a stock rodeo, designed to pit the skills of one cowboy poet against the others, all having paid an entry fee to compete for prize money, trophy buckles and awards, with an ultimate goal to help further develop the talents for both stage presence and writing styles, all at the same time to provide an entertainment value to the audience.

Driving the American West

The Chisholm Trail fundamentally changed the American West. From the birth of the cowboy as icon to the revival of the cattle industry, the Old Chisholm Trail helped shape our popular culture by altering how we thought of the American West and the individuals who lived there.
This traveling exhibit, a collaboration between Symphony in the Flint Hills and Flint Hills Design with major sponsorship from Lost Trail Soda, invites visitors of all ages to explore the Chisholm Trail from its inception in the 1860s to today.

Senior Wednesday: Along the Chisholm Trail

The Chisholm Trail is the most famous of cattle trails, and the dangers, blessings, and long lonely days on the trail have been referenced in many western songs. Jeff Davidson, musician and story teller from Eureka, will lead us up the trail by song. Davidson will sing those songs and tell how each relates to the trail. He'll lead us up the trail, turning a stampede, riding herd on a rainy night and eating 10 gallons of dust. It's going to be fun, so Cowboy Up, and hit the trail with us!

Film Series: The Far Country

As we continue our celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Chisholm Trail, watch how life on the cattle trail was depicted by Hollywood in four movies. The third movie in our series is the 1955 movie The Far Country. This movie stars James Stewart, John McIntire, Ruth Roman, and Walter Brennan. Set in the Yukon, Stewart and his friends are driving cattle to market from Wyoming to Canada, where the boom towns pay top dollar for beef. When they arrive in Skagway, the corrupt sheriff of the town steals the cattle and Stewart and his friends are forced to fight for the herd. Together with the female saloon keeper of another town, they find themselves up against an evil they were not prepared for. (Runtime: 96 minutes)

Film Series: Red River

The fourth and final movie in our film series celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Chisholm Trail is the 1948 film Red River. Based on Borden Chase's novel "The Chisholm Trail", John Wayne portrays Thomas Dunson, a headstrong frontiersman who, with his longtime partner Nadine Groot (Walter Brennan), abandons a westbound wagon train in 1851 to make his future as a rancher in Texas. Dunson informally adopts a young orphan (Mickey Kuhn) and over the next 14 years he builds up one of the largest ranches in the entire state of Texas. The Civil War has taken all money out of the South, so Dunson is unable to sell any beef in Texas and decides to move his large herd to Missouri over 1000 miles away through territory controlled by border gangs and Indians who have picked off what the gangs missed. Dunson is not above killing anyone who challenges his authority on the drive. His son Matthew steps in and takes the herd from Dunson and heads toward Kansas. (Runtime: 133 minutes)
